My thanks to all for a good start to the term. It was certainly a very busy first week.
I am very proud of the students, staff and families for their participation in the ANZAC Day Service at school on Friday and the various community ANZAC Day activities on Monday. The school community supported the events very well.
The Stanthorpe Show was another big event for our community. Captains Isabel Kay and Kira St John, together with the SSHS Captains, did a wonderful job opening the show. Isabel and Kira are great ambassadors for the school and our community.
Congratulations and well done to Mr Allan Lahey, Ms Courtenay Mason and the Agricultural Science students for their Winning Fruit Wall Display at the Show. A great effort. It was also really nice to see the talents of our students on display in the many other competitions.
The P&F Association also made a great contribution to the school through their efforts running the Can Bar at the Show. Thanks to the parents and staff who helped out on the two days.
Service to the community is one of our Mercy Values. This was on display throughout the week.
Well done all!
God Bless
Welcome back to all our families, students and staff after what I hope was a safe and happy Easter break. The term has again commenced at a hectic pace, with the lingering effects of COVID still providing periodic challenges in the world of teaching and learning for both staff and students. Please ensure that if your child is affected by this that you liaise closely with the relevant teachers to seek support with their learning.
This week, our Year 11 students have participated in a two-day workshop, facilitated by Lifeline, to support their development as Peer mentors. This is designed to support our Year 11 students to be effective leaders and mentors for the younger students in the school, particularly as part of the House mentor system. I thank Jacob Steele, Karen Petrie, Rachel Leslie and John Mahoney for their support of the students through this program.
Next week, Year 12 students finally, after multiple delays, will get the opportunity to participate in their leadership camp at Emu Gully. After a hectic start to the academic year, it provides a great opportunity for the students to connect as a group outside of the pressures of school and solidify their leadership aspirations for the year.
Finally, Term 1 Academic reports were distributed electronically to the new Parent portal last week. Please ensure you have viewed these reports in the lead up to Parent Teacher consultations in Week 4 on Secondary. Information was emailed to parents recently in relation to booking Parent teacher consultations. If you need assistance in setting up your access to the new parent portal, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Welcome back to Term 2.
Despite starting the term with two shorter weeks, learning has begun in earnest and it has been pleasing to see the level of engagement of the students in each of the classes. More and more of them have a growing awareness of the importance of the dispositions within the learning process and it is this which help sustain them as learners now and into the future.
This term we have some significant events on the calendar including the Border District Eisteddfod which involves poetry recitations and choir performances as well as NAPLAN for Year 3 and Year 5 students. Teachers will also be adding to their data in order to make informed judgements for the end of semester reports as well as conducting consultations with parents. I do encourage parents to take up this opportunity to meet with the teachers as it is important to us that we are working together in the best interests of all our learners. We also welcome back a special visitor to our campus this term - Healthy Harold. The sessions with Harold and his 'carer' Jane will take place between 11 - 13 May.
Thank you those students and their families who were able to participate in the ANZAC Day march on Monday. It is always good to be able to be part of the community, particularly on such significant days and to take the time to remember those who have sacrificed much, and those who continue to do so, in order that our lives might be more peaceful and harmonious.
With God’s blessings

Easter Isn't Over Yet !
Although signs of Easter may have disappeared, the Easter season has in fact only just begun. Easter is not just one day, but a season which lasts for a total of 50 days, from Easter Sunday until Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Christ.
This season allows us the opportunity to experience a time of grace, joy and thanksgiving.
It is a time of:
Living with Joy – faith in the Resurrection of Christ enables us to hold onto an enduring sense of joy, even in dark or difficult times.
Living without Fear – when Christ appears to the women at the tomb, he says, “Do not be afraid!” and these words speak to us helping us cope with fear or obstacles in our lives.
Living with New Eyes – the Easter spirit gives us a sense of renewal and newness, allowing us to see the world with new eyes, appreciating all that we have around us.
Catholic Easter Prayer
Lord, the resurrection of Your Son
has given us new life and renewed hope.
Help us to live as new people
in pursuit of the Christian ideal.
Grant us wisdom to know what we must do,
the will to want to do it,
the courage to undertake it,
the perseverance to continue to do it,
and the strength to complete it.

Happy Easter everyone!

GETTING STARTED WITH THE SENTRAL FOR PARENTS APP
Recently we let you know that we would be moving to a new online portal and app for communications with parents and carers. We have received some positive feedback from those who are using this new initiative.
You are encouraged to register as soon as possible with the unique Portal Access Key. Once you set up an account password, you can use this login for both the Parent Portal online and the app Sentral for Parents.
Getting started :
- Download the app. Depending on your device, visit either the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store and search for Sentral for Parents.
- Search for St Joseph’s School in the search box.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Register here.
- Enter your details.
- Tap Create Account.
- You will receive a confirmation email.
- Click the link in the confirmation email to verify your details.
- Log into the app.
- Use the access keys provided by the school to add your children to the app. Access keys can be added in the Settings menu.
- You will then see the Home Screen.
- View the QuickStart guide.
- You're now ready to use the app.
The Parent Portal has many features which will provide access to your child’s information. We will begin using some of these features and progress gradually.
Newsfeed
The newsfeed will contain news items from the school relating to your child. Some items may require you to act, whilst others will be informational only.
Academic reports will also be published to the Portal newsfeed.
Absences
Absences allows you to communicate absence information to the school. This includes past absences that require explanation and ‘future’ absences.
Daily Notices
Daily notices are written up by the school for the day, as opposed to the Newsfeed, which is a live feed of things relating to your child.
Interviews
Interviews relate to Parent and Teacher interviews. This will be used in the future for parents to book available time slots or request a specific time.
Resources
School documents that we wish to share with you as parents/caregivers.
Newsletters
Open and download current and past newsletters from this area.
This new system will improve capabilities relating to administration, attendance, assessment and reporting, student wellbeing, payments, and parent-teacher communications.
We are excited with this new initiative. If you need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Angelina Sims on 4681 5904.
IMPORTANT NOTICE - PARENTS / CAREGIVERS OF SECONDARY STUDENTS
Parents/Caregivers,
Please ensure your child/ren’s lockers are locked at ALL times. If any item is taken or stolen from their lockers, and lockers are not secured, it then becomes your responsibility.
Friday, 22nd April, saw students and staff participate in the ANZAC Day Service in the Bathersby Centre and at our War Memorial.
A special thank you to our guest speaker, Lieutenant Colonel Lachlan Searle, who is currently serving as a Senior Advisor for the Australian Army in Timor-Leste and is the father of Elizabeth, Ashlin and Chloe here at St Joey's.
Thank you also to Councillor Stephen Tancred, Father Gonzo, our Navy Cadets and Seniors for their involvement in the service. Lest We Forget.

SUCCESS AT THE STANTHORPE SHOW
Artistic success at the Stanthorpe Show!
Several students from Years 7 – 10 entered artworks completed last year into the Stanthorpe Show in the Fine Arts and Pottery sections.
It was a great opportunity to showcase their work and efforts in a public display, with some students being awarded for their skills, winning 1st, 2nd, Highly Commended and Reserve Champion!
Congratulations to the prize winners, and to all students for putting their work on display.
Success for St Joey's Agricultural Science team
Congratulations to the St Joey's Agricultural Science team (Mr Allan Lahey, Ms Courtenay Mason and their students) for their win in the Fruit Wall Display competition at the Stanthorpe Show.
Based on a Stanthorpe’s 150th year theme, the display incorporated local fruit and products and included a timeline in the front of the display with key dates and information about Stanthorpe’s history. It also incorporated a hydroponic tank, with fish, in the middle to reflect this year being the UN International Year of Aquaculture and Fisheries.
The products on display are from New England Larder, Jamworks, Stanthorpe Honey, Mick's Four Seasons Nursery and our School's very own wine and eggs.
Congratulations and well done team.
Individual Success for Many of our Talented Students
The individual talents of many of our students were also on display at the Stanthorpe Show over the weekend.
A special congratulations to Year 12 student, Lara Parnell, who did very well in the riding and horse events, receiving the award for Supreme Champion Rider, as well as awards for Champion Pony, Champion Galloway, Champion Hack, Supreme Champion Hack and Champion Lady Rider. Congratulations also to Year 3 student, Patrick Moxham who was awarded Lego Champion, Year 2 student, Noah Adams who was awarded the highest points award for Junior Cookery. Noah had 4 1st place entries, one 2nd and 1 encouragement. Well done also to Year 9 student, Katie-Lee Jansink who received the Youth Champion Award for her artwork.
NEWS FROM THE YEAR 4/5 CLASSROOM
Using a 'See, Think, Wonder' strategy, conversations revealed a depth of observation. Many questions and comments were made about the content of the posters.
NAPLAN PREPARATIONS ARE UNDERWAY
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas of:
-
reading
-
writing
-
language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
-
numeracy.
The tests provide an important contribution to monitoring and evaluating the performance of schools and school systems in these fundamental capabilities. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education approaches are working, the areas to be prioritised for improvement, and those schools requiring support in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.
The results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
The Year 6 class recently visited the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery to explore the history and creativity of our local area through a variety of artworks and styles.
Mary Findlay spoke to the children about what is involved in putting together an exhibit from start to finish.
YEAR 8 EXPLORE 150 YEARS OF STANTHORPE'S CREATIVITY
Year 8 students visited the Art Gallery on Tuesday 26th April to view the exhibition, ‘Then | Now | ART : 150 Years of Stanthorpe’s Creativity’.
Students viewed the artworks that were curated into different decades of Stanthorpe’s creative and cultural past, and will use one of the works - The Subtle Alchemist by Carolyn Dodds (1991) - as stimulus for this term’s unit. Students will analyse the lino print, its imagery, subject matter, skills and elements of design, before undertaking their own lino print.
(Artwork is part of the SRAG collection. Photography by Sandra McEwan).
Year 12 Chemistry students performed a mandatory practical where they create various types of galvanic cells (batteries).
This is the students final prac in Unit 3 and can form part of their student experiment, if they choose.
The Annual St Joseph’s School Parents & Friends Association will be held on Saturday 14th May 2022.
The Trivia Night is a wonderful opportunity for our Stanthorpe community to come together, relax and enjoy a night out along with raising funds towards the continuing improvement of our school’s facilities and resources. We encourage our school families to get a team together, as we can guarantee it will be a fantastic night of fun & laughter.
The evening will also include a Multi Draw Raffle, and any donation to contribute towards the evening, either monetary or goods will be very gratefully accepted. If you are able to make a donation towards this event, we ask that it is provided to the School Office please, by Friday 6th May.
We take this opportunity to thank you for your consideration of this request and ongoing generosity & support of our School.
So don't miss out - book your table now !
The Conflict in Ukraine
Around the world, people are saddened and devastated by the events unfolding in Ukraine. Both adults and young people alike are feeling the stresses of war from afar as they experience fear, frustration and helplessness. The 24 hour news cycle has shown us upsetting images raising many questions, especially for our young people, about what is happening.
Parents and caregivers need to be guided by their child’s curiosity. There is strong evidence to suggest that having a supportive discussion about a stressful event in a developmentally appropriate way, can actually decrease distress. It’s best to “name it, to tame it.” This will also combat any misinformation to which they have most likely already been exposed to through social media, pictures or video clips.
Children need to know that they are being taken seriously. So it is recommended that you don’t avoid the difficult questions. Ensure you address their questions honestly and sensitively. With less life experience than adults, young people may need help navigating news about this crisis. Use this is as an opportunity to model and encourage compassionate views towards fellow humans, regardless of distance or circumstance.
This Special Report offers guidance on how best to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

Cross Country
The last day of Term 1, Friday 1st April, saw the annual School Cross Country run and won for another year, with students and staff being presented with a beautiful day.
The track proved to be a tougher test for the students than previous years with the unprecedented rainfall having the students work extra hard in many sections, but still recording impressive times.
Davadi were big winners on the day, being crowned Primary, Secondary and overall Champion house.
For the first time in a number of years a record was broken with Georgia Petrie setting a new mark for the 11 Years Girls.
A big thankyou to the Stanthorpe Golf Club for allowing us the use of their great facilities and a personal thanks to Mary McLucas and Michael Hilton for being in attendance to present their special family trophies to the Champion Houses and to Symphony Hill Wines for your ongoing support in sponsoring our Age Champion and Runner Up trophies and medallions.
